Space for Yearning

6 August - 11 October 2009

Space for Yearning features works that are at home in the evocative space between desire and its fulfilment.

In today's busy world we want so much. We want to understand. We crave intimacy. We yearn for a different past and a better future. We want to be close to others, yet we also need spaces to dream, to imagine, to be ourselves. And, more often than not, we don't get what we want.

We abide with insatiable, ever-expanding desire. And yet its very pervasiveness may sometimes be because we feel uncomfortable with the empty spaces that remain when desire is absent. At the same time, we often don't allow ourselves to experience our yearning in its fullness as we rush towards satisfaction. Space for Yearning features works that are at home in the evocative space between desire and its fulfilment.

And, as felt desires rise and pass away, we may find that the dreaded empty space becomes a fertile void, pregnant with possibility.

Artists featured include Stephen Hart, Judith Wright, Arryn Snowball, Scott Redford, Ian Friend, Matthew Sleeth and Bea Maddock.
