Dreaming of Chanel

The Chanel suit is one of the 20th century's most iconic garments. Seen by many as the epitome of style, its classic silhouette is instantly recognisable, and yet owning one is for most women only a dream.

Dreaming of Chanel is about the dreams attached to pieces of clothing, whether they are made by famous designers or unknown dressmakers. This exhibition brings to life the garments contained in the book Dreaming of Chanel by Charlotte Smith. These garments are part of the Darnell collection, which Charlotte inherited from her Godmother Doris in 2004, consisting of thousands of pieces of clothing dating from 1790 to 1995.
