Melodic Rhythms: Marimba for Beginners

Come and make music in the galleries on the final day of the exhibition Anne Wallace: Strange Ways. Lead by world fusion artist Zaia Kendall, a rhythmic and melodic percussionist known for her mysterious instrumental music, this small group workshop will teach you how to make beautiful rhythms using the marimba. Resembling a large xylophone, the marimba has wooden bars and produces sounds that are velvety, resonant and rich. Learn to play surrounded by the compelling paintings of figurative artist Anne Wallace, many of which are heavily influenced by music and poetry.

Zaia has played with music projects in Australia and overseas and teaches percussion and marimba workshops. Inspired by her mentor Linsey Pollak, Zaia is interested in odd rhythms, particularly Balkan style rhythms. Passionate about the healing qualities of music, she lives on a Permaculture farm with her husband Tom and founded the not for profit organisation PermEco Inc., which Zaia supports in a number of roles.

This workshop is family friendly and caters for up to 15 people.
