LOOKOUT
LOOKOUT celebrates the research and creative projects of QUT students. The program invites undergraduate and postgraduate students across all faculties to submit proposals for showcasing an artwork, research project, design object, or similar creation related to their university studies. Selected projects will be featured in QUT Art Museum's window box. Both completed projects and conceptual proposals are welcome.
14 July – 31 August: Celise Gibson, PhD Candidate
Celise Gibson is Wadjigan woman of the Batjamalh language group, whose photomedia practice reworks images of Country through layered processes of disruption, concealment, and reconfiguration. Drawing on family archives, landscape photography, and everyday materials, she produces compositions where the image is fractured, overlaid, and partially obscured.
"Echoes #1 (2025) reconfigures an image of my ancestral Country through layered visual interventions. The work begins with a documentary landscape photograph that is disrupted by concentric circular forms composed from scanned images of my children’s toys and everyday domestic materials. These overlays operate as both structure and interruption—partially obscuring the landscape while activating it through repetition, rhythm, and visual density. This work extends key concerns within my practice, particularly the use of photographic disruption to unsettle fixed representations of place and to hold multiple temporalities and narratives within a single frame. The integration of domestic objects continues my exploration of motherhood as a site of cultural continuity, positioning care and daily life as integral to ongoing relationships with Country. In this way, the work contributes to my broader trajectory of investigating how art practices can enact Aboriginal sovereignty through material and visual strategies." — Celise Gibson
